Pirates Announce Head Coach May 26, 2021 - Picton, Ontario Press Release: Pirates Name New Coach A recurring theme seems to be emerging with the Picton Pirates as the Provincial Junior Hockey League entry retools for the upcoming season. Incoming and former General Manager Jason Parks announced recently he has hired a former Pirate alum Kyle Hawkins Schulz as Head Coach for the 2021-22 season. As a player Hawkins Schulz is better known for suiting up for the Wellington Dukes of the Ontario Junior Hockey League for three seasons however the diminutive spark plug also managed to suit up for the Pirates for three games in 2010 as part of a conditioning stint. The former West Lake resident who now works for the City of Belleville is also familiar with the Pirates bench area as he was an assistant coach under then-Coach and GM Ryan Woodward in 2013 when the club earned its first Schmalz Cup title, defeating the Essex 73’s in five games to capture the Ontario title. I guess we are getting the band back together,” Parks said with a laugh. Knowing Hawk was available and interested in coming back to Picton this time in a head coaching role, he was my first choice and the organization is so happy to welcome him back.” While he’s had experience on several benches at several levels including the OJHL and Eastern Triple AAA, this role will mark Hawkins Schulz’s first as Head Coach. For 2 straight seasons the Pirates will finish second with the youngest team in the league. This season the Pirates started 7-12-1 but have gone 20-2 since. Truly great improvement. Well deserved Ty! Defenceman of the Year Nick Kyte was named the Tod Division Defenceman of the Year last night. In his 4th season as a Pirate, Nick leads all Tod Division defense in scoring with 9 goals and 21 assists for 30 points. Great job Nick! Rookie of the Year Khaden Henry has been named the Tod Division Rookie of the Year. Khaden leads the Pirates in scoring and the Tod Division in goals with 37 goals and 23 assists for 60 pts in 42 games. Congrats Khaden! Most Sportsmanship Last night, Captain William Harrison was awarded the Tod Division Most Sportsmanship award. Will has only 8 minutes in penalties this season while playing almost 30 minutes a night. In 206 career regular season games he has only 40 minutes in penalties. We are proud of you Willy!
